We think that John Bobbitt born in 1789 in North Carolina was the first Bobbitt family in Indiana. We know from census records that John and his family moved to Indiana before 1820. The judgment is difficult to make because we also think that the family of Isaac Bobbitt in Rush County went to Indiana from Virginia in the 1820's.
In 1830 the census recorded six Bobbitt families, Isaac Bobbett in Rush County, Freeman Bobbit, Stephen Bobbit, George Bobbitt, and Stephen Bobbitt, all in Scott County, and John Bobbitt in Orange County. The Bobbitt records of Indiana are difficult in that the state had many Babbitt families from New England.
Not only Bobbitt families, but many families did not stay long in Indiana. They migrated on to states further west. By the time of the 1850 census only three counties had positive Bobbitt families.
Family # 27, counted September 11, 1850.
We are not certain if this Elijah is the son of Drury Bobbitt of Butler County, Kentucky or of Randolph Bobbitt of Campbell County, Kentucky.
Nicholas Bobbitt was a son of John and Nancy (Huse) Bobbitt, see family # 126. Several of the children of John Bobbitt moved to Indiana from Tennessee. The families lived in or near Valeene Indiana. All were farmers.
