PULASKI COUNTY KENTUCKY

The first Bobbitt family to live in the present day boundaries of the state of Kentucky was James Bobbitt, the son of James and Elizabeth (Dalton) Bobbitt of Pittsylvania County Virginia.

James received a land grant of 200 acres on October 27, 1798 on the waters of Buck Creek, in what was then Lincoln County. The land grant was for service in the Revolutionary War (Book 26, p.365)

Prior to 1774 the entire state of Kentucky was known as one of the counties of Virginia. It was called Fincastle County. In 1776 Fincastle County was divided and the state of Kentucky as we know it today was called Kentucky County Virginia. In 1780 the state was divided into three counties, Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln. In 1790 there were further divisions. Pulaski County was formed in 1798 from Green County and mostly from Lincoln County. The county seat of Pulaski County is Somerset Kentucky. The County is located in the south-eastern part of the state, not far from the Tennessee border.

The Bobbitt family in Pulaski County Kentucky all had their immediate origin in Montgomery, Grayson, and Carroll Counties of Virginia. They were descendants of James and Elizabeth Bobbitt who reared a family of four sons and four daughters on the banks of the Pigg River and Frying Pan Creek in Pittsylvania County Virginia.

Various Bobbitt families from Grayson County Virginia went to Pulaski County from 1800 until 1850. The most important of these families was that of James Bobbitt, son of Captain William Bobbitt, and husband of Rebecca Day Bobbitt.

The 1790 and 1800 federal census records for Kentucky are not in existence. A reconstructed list for those years has been made up from tax lists. There are no Bobbitt families listed in these tax lists.

The first recorded record of the Bobbitt family in Pulaski County was the sale of 170 acres of land on the waters of Flat Lick, sold by James Reese to James Bobbitt on December 4, 1804, in the presence of David Hardesty, and Peter Lee. (Deed Book 2, page 336)

From 1844 to 1860 many of the Bobbitt family members from Pulaski County migrated to Missouri. Records of the family may be found in the counties of Howard, Linn, Johnson, Pettis, and Lawrence, in the state of Missouri.

There are numerous fine families in Pulaski County related to the Bobbitt family. Among these are Lee, Cragg, Paschal, Hubble, Cox, Edwards, Starnes, Prather, McHargue, Sewell, Doolin, Webb, Gilmore, Tibballs, Miller, Bates, Hays, Meece, Barron, Randolph, Thompson, McKenzie, Phelps, Morgan, Richardson, Thompson, and Hill.
