Will of JWill of John Bobbett, Blaxhall, Suffolk, 1576

People/Relationships Named in the will

Wife: Cicely (Cecylie)

Children: None listed

Nieces/Nephews: Robert Bobbett, William Bobbett

Godchildren: William Durante, John Wiseman, John Gates (probably), Joane Woodrowe

Sisters: Anne Smythe, Joyce, Joane

Servants: Margaret Brother, Robert Palmer, Thomas Waller

·        Numerous other people are mentioned, but their relationship to John Bobbett is not stated

·        I have put names (and relationships) in bold

Transcription standards followed and unusual spellings defined

·        The scribe often abbreviated combinations that began with “the” and ended with a word beginning in a vowel.  For example “the earth” became “therthe” and “the age” became “thage” and “the hands” became “thandes”  As most of these are self explanatory, I left them as-is in the transcription

·        The writer often used a superscript or postscript abbreviation mark, I have noted this with a use of “~” at the end of the word

·        If the writer used a standard abbreviation notation, I filled in the expected letters between brackets.  For example the symbol the looks like a “p” with a cross mark through its tail was an abbreviation for “per” “pre” and “par”.  In my transcription I have reinserted the vowel and the “r” in the brackets.  Also, when a “Robte” with a ~ above the “bt” appears, I have inserted the “er” in brackets and Willim with a flourish at the end of the “m” signifying the absent letters have also been filled in. In abbreviated words that contained no abbreviation mark, I left it intact.  So, “within” remains “wthin” and “Item” remains “Itm” and “condition” remains “condicon”

·        The writer often used an extra “e” so that “said” and paid” appear as “saied” and “paied”

·        As was typical, when writing roman numerals the writer used a long “j” looking stroke to signify the last “i” I have followed this in the transcription so that four is rendered “iiij”

·        The writer puts monetary denominations in superscript.  So that pounds appear as a superscript “l” or “li”, shillings appear as a superscript “s” and pence appear as a superscript “d” or “ds”

·        Ages were written in roman numerals, but then finished with anglicized, superscript endings.  So that sixteen appears as xvj ten and forty appears as xlti

·        ymediatlie/ymediatly (immediately)

·        There are four words that even with the help of the OED and others who are familiar with sixteenth-century English handwriting, I was still not able to identify.  These have been left highlighted in yellow.

·        The probate note at the end is in Latin.  My Latin is rusty, but it gives the names of the executors who had the will proved: Thomas Osborne, Edward Smythe, and Thomas Smythe.  The date is 2 February 1576, which in the modern calendar would be 2 February 1577.  The letters I could not make out are also highlighted in yellow

·        From the Oxford English Dictionary (OED):

Mershe: marsh  (In some regions of England, especially East Anglia it could also mean a low-lying meadow or land that needed to be drained or was near a river or sea)

            Whethers: castrated rams

Neat: bovine animal (ox, bull, cow, or heifer)

Mylche: a domestic animal, usually milk-producing

Tumbrell: a type of cart that could be tipped back to dump its contents (especially dug carts)
