The Family In England and America

Ongoing research of the Bobet/Bobbet/Bobbett/Bobbitt Family

The latest items of interest are listed between the tree roots below.  The items are listed in the order they were found and/or researched.  E-mails will be included to give you an understanding of what the 'thinking' was at the time.   Not all the information listed below may be about one particular Bobbitt family line.

Tuesday, September 19, 2006  -- Information will be added to this file as it becomes available.  Therefore, the latest information will be toward the bottom the file.

Thursday, November 2, 2006 -- The Bobbett (Suffolk) Research Report, 14 September 2006, by Dr. Amy Harris, posted on Page 1 of 'Continuing Research' explains the research that has been accomplished and gives excellent starting points for extended research that is in the planning stages to begin January 2007.  Marsha Berry, genealogist, has some very good ideas and avenues to pursue.  2007 is going to be exciting for our Bobbitt family.

Tuesday, March 20, 2007 -- Additional information about our immigrant ancestor William Bobbet, the Whittington family, and the Sturdivant family.

Email from Marsha Berry dated March 19, 2007 -- "My 8th great grandfather William Bobbet and Francis Whittington had adjoining land in City Point now Hopewell, Charles City County now Prince George County, Virginia.  I have a close-up map with the location of William Bobbet and Francis Whittington's land in City Point. Today the city of Hopewell designates the land as an industrial and water and waste area."

"As an example of what is in these files, on the Wm Bobbet & Francis Whittington 1674 City Point Charles City Co now Prince George Co Virginia .pdf, at the beginning I have a map that shows:

1. William Bobbet and family lived in City Point from 1674-1712 and Francis Whittington adjoining the Bobbet land.  [William Bobbet married Francis Whittington's daughter Elizabeth a month or so after William arrived and settled in early 1674.]

2. William Bobbet and family moved in 1712 to Jones Hole Swamp southwest of Templeton, Virginia, where William and his wife are buried.

3. William Bobbet's son William bought land west of the town of Dinwiddie in Rocky Run in 1718 and moved there in 1718 and bought more land in 1725.  William Bobbet's son John moved to North Carolina and was given land in 1718.  Their brother James is not included on the map."

4. The Sturdivant family received a land grant in 1652 and lived in Henrico County, Virginia until they moved in 1673 directly to the south side of Blackwater Creek south of Petersburg in Charles City County, now Prince George County, Virginia.  The distance from William Bobbet and Francis Whittington's properties to any Sturdivant family is around 20 miles or so apart and there were Indians in between."

Here are the 3 .pdf files.

.pdf file 1. Wm Bobbet & Francis Whittington 1674 City Point Charles City Co now Prince George Co Virginia [10 pages]

.pdf file 2. No Joanna Sturdivant dau of John Sturdivant and Sarah Hallom had  all sons Henrico and Charles City County Virginia [9 pages]   Comment:  John Sturdivant and Sarah Hallom had five children, all boys. -- K.B.

.pdf file 3. British Parish Registers have Sturdivant in counties but no Suffolk on web site [1 page] Please note that I am including one source here, but the other sources have the same result. -- Marsha Berry

Comment:  It is very important that our family (you and me) studies and understands the history, geography, discipline, human interpretations, etc. of the time. And, to me, there are two deciding facts. One, the distance between the Bobbet family and the Sturdivant family was 20 miles.  Two, there were Indians who lived between the two families.  I think these two facts would severely curtail visitations between the families. -- K.B.

Subject: More William W. Bobbitt and his father Isham Drury Bobbitt Junior Bible pages.

Dear Keith,

I now have 5 more pages. Three marriages pages and two memoradum pages have familiar names.

One marriage entry and one memoradum like page will be a surprise for you...

1. Marriage of John William Bobbitt to Amy Alston - one of the witnesses to their wedding 1743, Edgecombe County, North Carolina is a descendant of my/our Whittington family...Richard Whittington.  I already sent you a .pdf about Richard Whittington. I have already put the descendancy to from Miss Elizabeth Whittington's brother William Whittington to Richard Whittington on my rootsweb.com.

2. Memoradum or death and burial - William and Elizabeth Whittington Bobbet burial place as it includes three men who lives near them.

"Note: The topozone.com map of present Virginia I previously sent you, which marked a possible location of William Bobbet's land south of Jones Hole Swamp, is not correct to be located on the west side of today's hyway south of Templeton, Virginia. I will soon send a correct map as it is located on the east side of today's hyway."

"When one reads the internet online description of the location of the only area along the Jones Hole Swamp that could be and was settled at that time for plantations, read the internet pages of three men:

Thomas B. Burge, Thomas Wynne, and John Freeman, who settled on the land along Jones Hole Swamp as did William Bobbet.  On the Burge, Wynne, and Freeman internet pages, the location is better defined as...the Jones Hole Swamp is to the north of the Nottoway River and this is the clue of the location of those who settled Jones Hole Swamp. An old cemetery is in that area and can be seen on topozone.com."

Please remember I have seen these Bible pages in this Bible a long time ago through the years once a year, visiting my cousins in Bureau and Putnam County, Illinois, so they are not a surprise to me.

Regards, Marsha

Comment:  The last memoradum page lists the death dates and burial locations of our immigrant ancestor William Bobbet and his wife Elizabeth Whittington Bobbet.  These pages include many marriages and deaths of this line.
