William Bobbet sold 95 acres of his land granted to him on 27 October 1673

near the present day town of Hopewell in the seaport town of City Point which is

now extinct and made this sale on 12 May 1703.  William Bobbet lived on that

one acre of land until the time was right and he bought land on 18 June 1712

south of the present day town of Petersburg, Virginia.

Note: Hopewell and Petersburg are about 20 miles apart, a little more than a

day's ride on a horse.  Then it is another 11 miles from Petersburg to Jones

Hole Swamp south of today's Templeton.

William Bobbet purchased 90 acres of land on 18 June 1712 South Side of

Jones Hole Swamp in Prince George County, Virginia.  As William Bobbet is

buried south of today's Petersburg, Virginia, then he died after his land purchase

in 1712 as this land went to his son William Bobbet Junior in 1712 and his son

William Bobbet Junior sold the land and purchased land in Rocky Run in 1718

and 1725.

The John Lead, Leader, Lead II or even Ladd Question

This submitter has read the surname as Lead.

The name is John Lead for 3 reasons:

1. The last two ll's in Tunstall have a very definite structure that doesn't appear

in the Lead/Leader/Leadall/Lead II name.

2. The pen strokes that look like L's are parts of the "P" from the line above.

3, There is nothing seen to suggest an "er" ending in the name.  The combination

of "D" in Lead and the "P' above looks just like the combination, one line above

of a P and a D.

27 Oct 1673 - William Bobbett

30 Oct 1673 - Francis Whittington

Why was Francis Whittington on William Bobbet's land grant 3 days before

he had his own land grant on 30 October?

Some land grants were prearranged for being recorded on a certain date.  Such

may be the case here, as William Bobbet would have needed to prearrange for

this to be taken care of before his departure on the ship "Martha" from England.

And, it is believed that Francis Whittington was the person to make arrangements

in Virginia.

Richard Tonstall chr 26 Jan 1644 Rystone, Yorkshire, England

Father: William Tonstall

The registers of Fartham, Yorkshire, 1569-1812

William Bobbett's 1673 Land Grant was written up in England and

then was copied in Virginia.

Even though George Cabell Greer's book: Early Virginia immigrants

1623-1666, does not include the years 1673 and 1674, in the

outline Virginia Help List, William Mecham said:

"This is an alpabetical listing of ca. 20, 000 immigrants with the following

information: name of immigrant, date [probably the year in which "headright"

was claimed, rather than the immigrant's arrival date in Virginia, name of

patentee or other party importing the immigrant, county. Rarely, these is other

information, such as "his wife."

"To have and to hold"  in the land grant does not refer to a wife.  It means that

if William Bobbett does not marry and have heirs, his land goes back to the

King of England who owns the land in Virginia.  William Bobbett did marry his

neighbor's daughter and had 3 sons.

Artist Jacob Knyff painted what he saw at the England port in late 1673. The ship, an

English flyboat, loaded with guns, and a few male passengers, was the ship "Martha."

Jacob Knyff: 1638 - 1681

Dock Scene at a British Port by Knyff

Date: 1673

Materials: Oil on canvas

Measurements: Painting 965.2 x 1270 mm

Description

England and Dutch ships taking on stores or cargo at a port.  The activities relating to

the loading has been closely observed.  It has been set in a harbor, with the tower of a

gate and a quay visible on the right, and the coast in the distance on the left.  An

England flagship is on the right, firing a salute and flying the ensign from the stern

carved with the royal coat of arms.  Beside the quay is an English flyboat that, from her

shape, was probably Dutch-built.  A royal yacht is arriving on the left and this has

prompted the firing of the salute.  On the extreme left is the stern of a Dutch ship.  On

the quay two bales of stores or goods with clear markings have been positioned in the

foreground.  Men are involved in loading up small craft. a horse dragging a barrel on

skids to the water's edge and there are several groups of gentlemen and women

observing the activities.  A guard stands outside a sentry box in the gate-way.

From 1673 Knyff's output appears to have been mostly British coastal or river scenes,

with increasing emphasis on accurate and colourful depiction of the great ships of the

Stuart navy.  Although Dutch-born Knyff came to England when Charles II issued a

general invitation to Dutch artists and craftsmen to work in England in 1672.  Although

the two countries were at war, patronage for artists in Holland had diminished and a

number took advantage of this offer, including the van de Veldes and Knyff.

Cockett's chapter on Jacob Wouterazoon Knyff in "Early Sea Pioneers" contains a

list of Knyff's 37 paintings, some colour illustrations and a short sketch of Knyff's life

and background. Jacob Knyff worked and died in England.  As Charles II ordered,

Knyff's paintings must be what he personally witnessed.

Notes for MISS WHITTINGTON OR WITHINGTON:

Calvin Kyle Bobbitt has said:

We do not know the maiden name of the wife of William Bobbitt Senior, but

believe it was Joanna Sturdivant and that she was called "Anna."

The 1820 Campbell County, Virginia Census has Joanna Sturdivant,

daughter of William Sturdivant, a hundred years after the wife of William

Bobbett passed away.

Or, someone made a type-O and wrote 1754 as 1674 and this is  where

all of this Joanna or Anna Sturdivant married William Bobbett started.

WILL BOBBETT, 96 A., 3 R., 24 P., Chas. City Co., S. side Appomatock

Riv., neigh., Mr. Whittington; on Major Epes line, & Cattale Br.,

27 Oct. 1673, p. 181. Trans. of 2 pers: John Lead, Richard Tonstall.

The land survey indicates that William Bobbett had 2 neighbors: Mr.

Whittington and Major Epes, and his other neighbors would be located

quite a long distance from these three families.

Neighbor Major Epes's daughters's marriages are accounted for and

they did not marry William Bobbett.

Someone online asked:

Who are William Bobbett's other neighbors?  One of their daughters

could have married him?

Good questions but neighbors in 1673 were few and far between and

the boundary lines show this. Also, this submitter has more information

of who married William Bobbett than is being shared here on the internet.

This submitter's Bobbitt family had not ever heard of our William Bobbett

marrying a Joanna or Anna Sturdivant    Plus, our Bobbitt family has

proven Suffolk,  England heritage and has family heirlooms and traditions

from Suffolk, England. We are not from Wales, so the Sturdivant marriage

must be to another Bobbett family not related to us.

This submitter's 2nd great grandfather William W. Bobbitt wrote:

"Mr. Whittington/Withington next door to William Bobbett had daughters,

and he handled some of William Bobbett's affairs in Virginia.   William

Bobbett married one of Mr. Whittington's daughters."

This submitter's great grandmother Ida Belle Bobbitt Funk once wrote:

"A Miss Whittington marrying William Bobbett would be most likely,

as in my family Bible marriage record is printed William Bobbet married

Miss Withington/Whittington."

This submitter's cousin Barney, grandson of Ida Belle Bobbitt Funk wrote:

"Francis Whittington was born in about 1624 in Nottingham, England and

married Elizabeth about 1647 possibly in Virginia.  Francis Withington/

Whittington had sons and daughters and one of the daughters married our

William Bobbet."

Prince George County [Virginia]

254 acres on West Side of Rocky Run

Land Office Patients No.12, 1724-1726, p. 278 [Reel 11]

William Bobbett or Bobbitt Junior was granted 254 acres in

Prince George County [Virginia] in 1725 on payment of 25 shillings.

William Bobbitt Junior's father William Bobbet Senior sold his land on

May 12, 1703 to John Peterson:

"95 acres of land, purchased by John Peterson,  of William Bobbitt

Senior, by deed, May 12, 1703, it being the land on which said

Bobbitt was granted by patient on October 27, 1673."

Prince George County records, Volume 1713, page 28.

Note:  One acre of land was left for William Bobbitt Senior to live on, as on

27 October 1673, William Bobbet was granted 96 acres of land.

Note: John Peterson died in 1732.

In medieval England, title to land was conveyed in fee simple by a feoffment

with livery of seisen.  The essence of this was a public ceremony, performed

before witnesses, called a livery of seisen.  The seller and buyer [feoffer and

feofee] met on the land, where the seller gave to the buyer something

symbolic of the land.  No type of document was needed for this sort of

transaction until 1677, when the Statue of Frauds required one for all transfers

of land titles.  Sometimes the witnesses signed a statement that they had

observed the ceremony, but that did not constitute a deed by itself.

Prince George County Virginia Deed Book, 1710-1713:

On June 18, 1712, 90 acres of land was surveyed for William Bobbitt Senior in

Prince George County, Virginia on the south side of Jones Hole Swamp in

present day Prince George County, south of Petersburg, Virginia.
