WILLIAM BOBBITT       1777 - 1844       Son of Miles and Mary Bobbitt

A William Bobbitt was the son of Miles and Mary (Powell) Bobbitt. He is believed to have been the last child born in the family. His father died in 1794 and his mother died in 1825. William was born on the north side of Great Fishing Creek in what was at that time Bute County, North Carolina. Later the county was changed to Warren County.

William was first listed in the records in the census of Warren County in 1800. His mother, Mary (Powell) Bobbitt was listed as head of household.

Mary Bobbitt:

1 male under 10 (1790-1800)            2 females 16 - 26 (1774-1784)

2 males 16 - 26 (1774-1784)             1 female 45 & over ( 1755)

William was one of the two males born between 1774 and 1784, the other male was his brother, Jubilee Bobbitt. Before 1810 Jubilee Bobbitt migrated to Tennessee. We know that the family lived on the original farm place that Miles Bobbitt had received from his grandfather, Robert Moore Senior. For some reason, the family was not counted as a Bobbitt family in 1810. The reason is likely that a brother of Mary Powell Bobbitt was living with the family and they were listed under the name of Powell.

On January 10, 1810 after the census was taken for that year, William Bobbitt married Winifred (Winnie) Bennett. The marriage was recorded in Warren County. Robert Moore, a cousin of William Bobbitt was the bondsman for the marriage. We know that Winifred (Bennett) Bobbitt died before the 1820 census. The records indicate that she died after the birth of a daughter in 1811. The daughter is believed to have been named Emily.

In about 1814, William Bobbitt married Mary Plummer and lived for a short time with the Plummer family in Granville County, or near the border of Granville and Warren counties. The census record of 1820 taken in Warren County shows the family of William with his wife Mary (Plummer) Bobbitt.

William Bobbitt:

2 males under 10 (1810-1820)        1 female under 10 (1810-1820)

1 male 26 - 45 (1775-1794)            1 female 10 -16 (1804-1810)

                                                       1 female 26 - 45 (1775-1794)

The daughter age 10 to 16 was from the first marriage and all the other children are from the second marriage. The two sons were named William H. Bobbitt born in 1816, and Harvey M. Bobbitt, born in 1819.
