The census record of 1840 of Fayette County lists the family of William Bobbitt. By 1840 his wife had died. We believe that this record represents most of the family with the exception of his wife.
William Bobet:
2 males 5 - 10 (1830-1835) 1 female under 5 (1835-1840)
1 male 10 - 15* (1825-1830) 1 female 15 - 20 (1820-1825)
1 male 15 - 20 (1820-1835)
1 male 40 - 50**(1790-1800)
*This is Pressley Bartus Bobbitt, and ** this is William Bobbitt.
Francis Olley Bobbitt who was born on July 14, 1895 in Lamar County is a direct descendant of William Bobbitt. His family has lived in the same community since about 1829. Francis said that information handed down in the family stated that Allen Bobbitt came with grandfather Bartus Bobbitt from North Carolina and got two sections of land from the government to homestead.
The 1850 census record lists William Bobbitt and his family in Fayette County. The record was made on December 17, 1850.
William Bobet 55 (1795) South Carolina
Bartes Bobet 21 (1829) Alabama
William E. Bobet 16 (1834) Alabama
Caroline Bobet 12 (1838) Alabama
*I suspect that this is an error and that Bartus Bobbitt was born in South Carolina, although it is possible that the family was living in Alabama as early as 1821.
In a letter from Joyce Bobbitt Miller there is the statement that "Alexander B. Bobbitt said that there was a John Bobbitt who lived close to them and that his father, Alexander P. Bobbitt called him "Uncle John. John's wife was named Fannie and they had no children." The 1860 census records show that they had children but they probably did not live to maturity.
