Alabama was made a state in 1819. By 1822 several members of the Bobbitt family of North Carolina had migrated to various settlements in Alabama. Our first record of a Bobbitt in the state is that of John Bobbitt in a census of Shelby County in 1820. Numerous records show that some Bobbitt family members were born in Alabama in 1817.
By 1830 descendants of William and Susannah (James) Bobbitt had moved from South Carolina to various settlements in the south. William and his brother Lemuel had moved from South Carolina to Montgomery and Fayette Counties in Alabama. Their brother James Bobbitt had moved to Madison County, Tennessee. Their brothers John and Stephen remained in South Carolina.
William Bobbitt was listed in the 1830 census of Fayette County. The record with his family is:
William Bobbitt:
2 males under 5 (1825-1830) 1 female under 5 (1825-1830)
1 male 5 10 (1820-1825) 1 female 5 - 10 (1820-1825)
1 male 30 40 (1790-1800) 1 female 20 - 30 (1800-1810)
William's wife was probably born in 1802. She is listed here with five children and was likely 28. She was deceased by the 1840 census. We believe that her name was Margaret Bartus.
