"Mrs. Lightfoot, who lives in Maury County, can perhaps give you more information concerning Drury Bobbitt (my ancestor) than anyone, as she told me she has a copy of his will. Drury died in Maury County, having lived his last years in the home of his daughter, Sarah G. Bobbitt. We know our Drury had at least three children, William, Sarah, and Emily who married in 1829 to Jacob Gray Robison in Maury County. We think that he was a cousin. The Gray name shows up again and again and it is thought by some that Drury's wife may have been a Gray. This was a very close-knit clan, almost seeming to prefer a cousin in marriage than an "outsider".
Drury Bobbitt was supposed to have been a "post rider" who covered a rather large territory delivering the mail by riding a horse. Indications are that he traveled Granville, Warren, Franklin, and Orange counties. In the 1820 census of Orange County, we find the family of Drury Bobbitt listed, and living near him, was the family of William Bobbitt.
Drury Bobbitt: (born 1773)
1 male 45 & over ( 1775) 1 female 10 - 16 (1804-1810)
1 female 16 - 26 (1794-1804)
1 female 45 & over(....-1775)
1 male 16 - 26 (1794-1805) 3 females under 10 (1810-1820)
2 females 16 - 26 (1795-1805)
The records can be read several different ways but it is certain that in these records are, William Bobbitt, 1797, Drury Bobbitt 1773, Sarah Bobbitt, 1802, Emily Bobbitt, 1804, Eliza Ann Bobbitt, 1818, Mary Jane Bobbitt, 1819, and Emily H. Bobbitt, 1820. The female over 45 and the female 10 to 16 may have been the second wife of Drury Bobbitt and she may have had the maiden name of Gray. We are unable to identify her or the female 10 to 16 either in North Carolina or Tennessee records.
We know that Lavina Bobbitt died in 1804 and when all the known facts are compared with the records we feel that we are on sound ground in locating the ancestry of Major William Bobbitt.
William Bobbitt married Sarah Woody and we believe that she was from Orange County, North Carolina and that the couple were married in Orange County. We have not found a recorded marriage for the couple. We know that they were married in 1817.
