The census records of Grayson County Virginia in 1820 and the ,census records of Pulaski County Kentucky in 1830 give a complete picture of the family of Randolph Bobbitt for the period.
According to the records, Randolph Bobbitt, married Rachel Phillips in 1815. The 1820 census of Grayson County lists the family as:
Randolph Bobbitt: (born in 1796)
1 male under 10 (1810-1820) Uriah Bobbitt, born 3-19-1818
1 male 16 - 24 (1784-1796) Randolph Bobbitt, born 1796
2 females under 10 (1810-1820) .... Nancy Bobbitt, born 1816
Margaret Bobbitt, born 1820
1 female 16 - 26 (1794-1804) Rachel Phillips, born 1798
Rachel Phillips is said to have died in 1828, and that Randolph later married Ellen Phillips, a sister of Rachel. I can find no record of this marriage. There is some belief that the name of Randolph Bobbitt's first wife was Rachel Ellen Phillips. The births of the children look as if Randolph Bobbitt had two wives before the census of 1840.
The 1830 census of Pulaski County Kentucky lists the family as:
Randolph Bobbitt:
2 males under 5 (1825-1830) 1 female 5 - 10 (1820-1825)
1 male 10 - 15 (1815-1820) 2 females 10 - 15 (1815-1820)
1 male 20 - 30 (1800-1810) 1 female 30 - 40 (1790-1800)
1 male 30 - 40 (1790-1800)
The 1840 census of Pulaski County, seems to have members who do not belong to the family of Randolph. It is certain that in this census, Randolph Bobbitt is without a wife. If there was an Ellen Phillips, she too, must have died in 1836 or 1837. This is the census.
1 male 5 - 10 (1830-1835) 1 female under 5* (1835-1840)
2 males 10 - 15 (1825-1830) 1 female 5 - 10 (1830-1835)
1 male 15 - 20* (1820-1825) 2 females 15 - 20 (1820-1825)
1 male 40 - 50 (1790-1800) 1 female 20 - 30* (1810-1820)
*Those marked, are in my research, Nancy Bobbitt born in 1816, and her daughter, Eliza Ann Bobbitt, born in 1839, and her husband, William Bobbitt, born in 1816. William's age has been reported incorrectly. Uriah Bobbitt, son of Randolph is away from home.
