There is no mention of a John Bobbitt in any of the records between 1736 and 1743. In 1743 we have this record.
"At a council held at Edenton, was read the following petitions for grants for land patents; Namely .....
John Bobbitt, 400 acres, in Edgecombe County."
In 1743 for John Bobbitt to make a petition for a land grant he had to be at least 17 years of age. If he was born in 1725 he would have been 18 years of age in 1743.
"John Tompkins of South Carolina to Richard Bennett of Edgecombe County for 180 acres of land on North prong of Buffaloe Branch .... Witnesses: William Bobbitt Junior, Charles Tomson. (Edgecombe County records In Halifax County, Book 5, page 334.)"
In this record William Bobbitt Junior is a witness to the land transaction of his grandfather, Richard Bennett. The land is the exact location of land owned by John Bobbitt and this William Bobbitt Junior was the brother of John Bobbitt. Both were sons of William Bobbitt Senior and grandsons of John Bobbitt of Chowan.
"Montfort Ealbeck of Edgecombe County to John Corlew of North Carolina, 637 acres of land joining ........ JOHN BOBBITT (Edgecombe County records in the records of Halifax County, Book 4, page 207.)"
This record is positive proof that John Bobbitt received the land grant he petitioned for in 1743.
Edgecombe County was formed from Bertie County in 1741. Granville County was formed from Edgecombe County in 1746. In 1758 Halifax County was formed from part of Edgecombe. The land John Bobbitt lived on eventually was land that was in the counties of Granville, Bute, and Warren. Today the land is in Warren County, and not far from the present day border of Halifax County. The county lines were not as exact in the 1700's as they are today.
