In 1883 the family settled in the vicinity of Winfield, Kansas. They lived there until the opening of the Cherokee Strip which later became Oklahoma. John Bobbitt made the run near Blickwell but like many others failed to gain a homestead. During the late fall of that year he purchased the farm on which he lived until failing health compelled him to move. In July 1920 John and his wife bought property in Lamont Oklahoma where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Mary Elizabeth Tyree Bobbitt died on October 30, 1923 and was buried in a cemetery in Lamont. John continued by choice to live in his home by himself until he died on February 17, 1930.

All the sons of Rufus and Mary Bobbitt were sincerely religious men, hardworking, friendly, and enjoyable company. In Lamont, John made many friends and everyone called him "Uncle John". His many neighbors visited him frequently trying to help him care for himself, and participating in numerous enjoyable conversations with him.

On a Wednesday afternoon he had a stroke and was found by a granddaughter who had stopped to see him on her way home from school. The following Monday evening at 9:00 PM surrounded by all of his children and a few good friends, John Williams Bobbitt died. He was buried by his wife in Lamont.

In addition to his one daughter and two sons, John was survived by twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was also survived by three brothers and two sisters who lived in West Virginia.

John Bobbitt joined the Mt. Vernon Baptist church in West Virginia when he was a young man and later joined the Lamont Baptist Church of Lamont Oklahoma.

Many of his descendants have attended the Bobbitt reunion held in Cowen, West Virginia. Many descendants live in Lamont, Oklahoma to this day. Some descendants live in California and Kansas and other areas. All descendants are a great credit to the heritage they received from their ancestors.
