Franklin Bobbitt and Sarah Annis were married for 24 years, when under the strain of hard work and ill health their relationship began to deteriorate. In 1937 a local newspaper carried this account.
" Dr. Franklin Bobbitt, 61 years old, professor of educational administration at the University of Chicago, was taken to the Billings Memorial hospital yesterday after he was found suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning in the garage behind his home.
"Early in the afternoon a maid, Roselle Keyes, noticed professor Bobbitt drive his car into the garage. When he failed to come into the house in fifteen minutes she went to investigate.
"The garage doors were closed, she told the Hyde Park police a little later, "and the engine of the car was running. Mr. Bobbitt was sitting in the car and its doors were closed. I helped him out and into the house."
"Professor Bobbitt was taken to the hospital in a private ambulance.
"On October 25, Mrs. Sarah Annis Bobbitt, who was married to the educator in 1903, sued for divorce, alleging cruelty. She did not consider it safe to live with him.
"Professor Bobbitt has been with the University of Chicago since 1909. He obtained leaves of absence in 1922 and 1924 to serve as assistant superintendent of schools in Los Angeles, California and Toledo, Ohio.
This is an unfortunate story, but made it possible for Dr. Bobbitt to meet a 48 year old nurse by the name of Mabel Deiwert who lived in Waldron, Indiana. Mabel was born on September 21, 1893, the daughter of John Charles and Mary (Crafton) Deiwert. Mabel and John Franklin Bobbitt were married on January 4, 1941.
