Robert Lee Bobbitt (1790-1864) was the last son and child of Captain William and Nancy (McKenzie) Bobbitt. After Robert died most of his family moved from Carroll County Virginia to Howard County Missouri. They left behind many first cousins, aunts and uncles who have descendants in Carroll County to the present day. One of the relatives of this family was May Webb. Among the family treasures of May Webb was a well framed photograph of the family of James and Sarah (Carroll) Bobbitt. Through the years the family members who knew the photograph died and when May (Harris) Webb inherited the photograph she did not know who the family members were or where the photograph came from. on one of my visits with May in Hillsville, Virginia she gave me the photograph and through my research I was able to contact descendants in Missouri who had an exact copy of the photograph. We have been able to identify the handsome children of James and Sarah (Carroll) Bobbitt. Sarah Carroll was a descendant of the famous Carroll family of Maryland.
James Bobbitt was born in 1814 in Grayson County, Virginia. Sarah Carroll was born in 1820 and we are not certain where she was born. Grayson County later became Carroll County and was name after the Carroll family of Maryland.
In the photograph back row from left to right are John L. Bobbitt, born 1860, Missouri Bobbitt, born 1863, Margaret Bobbitt, born 1857, Theophilus (Offie) Bobbitt, born 1868. Front row from left to right are William A. Bobbitt, born in 1859, and Joseph E. Bobbitt, born 1862.
Joseph Bobbitt was the father of Hugh G. Bobbitt and the grandfather of Bill Hugh Bobbitt of Missouri.
This is one of the great branches of the Bobbitt family. They were the kind of people families were proud to claim as relatives and representatives of the Bobbitt name. The picture was probably taken in 1890, and probably in Kansas City.
It is the oldest and best photograph of a complete Bobbitt family that I have been able to find.
