Pittsylvania county Virginia was formed from Halifax county in the year of 1767 as part of Camden Parish. In that year a list of tithables was taken by John Donelson for the parish. During the month of June every male over 16 and under 60 was taxable. Every negro regardles of age was taxable. Widows were sometimes taxable and sometimes they were not. Here is the interesting portion of the list.

JUNE 1767 - Pittsylvania county records.

List of Tithables taken by John Donelson, June 1767. Camden Parish.

Richard Bennett                                                      1 tithable

John Bobbitt                                                           1 tithable

William Bobbitt and James Bobbitt                        2 tithables    (James is at least 16)

Elizabeth Bobbitt and her negro Joe Bobbitt      1 tithable

Randolph is not mentioned and we know that he was not 16 years of age in 1767. We also know that he was living with his mother, and that she was head of her own household since the death of her husband in 1761. She has with her the negro Joe who was left to her by the will of James Bobbitt.

This list of tithables places the birth of Randolph Bobbitt in the year of 1752 and tells us that Randolph was only nine years of age when his father died. From the records it is apparent that the youngest child was Mary Bobbitt probably born in 1753 or 1754.

Dinah Bobbitt Jennings, and Ann Bobbitt Henson were married at the time of the will in 1761. Both of these daughters were older and by the time of the list of tithables were living in Grayson county Virginia. Here is a calculated list of the ages of the eight children of James and Elizabeth Bobbitt.

Dinah Bobbitt              born 1739

Ann Bobbitt                 born 1741

John Bobbitt                born 1742

William Bobbitt            born 1744

Livisa Bobbitt              born 1746

James Bobbitt Junior    born 1748

Randolph Bobbitt         born 1752

Mary Bobbitt               born 1754

There may have been other children who did not live to maturity.
