Elijah Bobbitt was born in Campbell County, Kentucky on February 14, 1818. He was the second son, and second child of Randolph and Mary (Polly) Kene Bobbitt. Polly Kene was the second wife of Randolph Bobbitt. Before Elijah had reached his second birthday, his father died, some time in the late fall of 1819. Randolph Bobbitt's death left a young woman with many children and members of a household to care for. She was aided with these duties by Randolph's eldest son, James Bobbitt. James Bobbitt was the son born between 1794 - 1804. The two males under 10 were the two young sons of Polly and Randolph Bobbitt. The daughter was a young daughter of Randolph and Nancy Mays Bobbitt. By 1820 the other children of Randolph and Nancy had left home or were living with older brothers and sisters.
When Elijah Bobbitt was almost three years of age, Polly Keene Bobbitt remarried. She married Phillip Roberts on February in Campbell County. James Bobbitt the eldest son married in the same year to Margaret Mann. Sometime between 1821 and 1830, Phillip Roberts and his new family moved to Boone County, Kentucky. Grandparents of Elijah Bobbitt, Joseph Keene and his wife also lived nearby in Boone County.
On January 1, 1839, Elijah Bobbitt of Boone County Kentucky bought land in Martin County, Indiana. Although he purchased this land and apparently paid taxes on the purchase, he did not settle the land until 1841 or 1842.
On August 24, 1841, Elijah Bobbitt married Mary Quick in Boone County, Kentucky. Mary Quick was the daughter of Jacob Quick, who was born in Ireland. His second wife was a widow by the name of Elizabeth Conley. They were married on July 24, 1820 in Campbell County.
Elijah and Mary (Quick) Bobbitt lived in Kentucky until after the birth of their first child, Columbus Bobbitt born in 1843. The family then moved to Martin County, Indiana where they were counted in the 1850 census.
