Granville County was formed in 1746 from Edgecombe County. It was named for John Carteret, Earl of Granville, who owned the land. He was Prime Minister under King George II of England.
A part of Granville County was taken to form Orange County in 1752. Bute County was formed entirely from Granville County in 1764. Part of Bute County and part of Granville County was taken to form Warren County in 1786. Franklin County was formed in 1779 from Bute County and part of Wake County was taken to form Franklin County in 1787. Vance County was not formed until 1881 from Granville, Warren, and Franklin Counties.
The names of the counties changed, but the cradle of the Bobbitt family was the same land and is today in Warren County North Carolina.
