At a court held in Edenton, the following petitions for grants and patents of land was read:
"JOHN BOBBITT of Edgecombe, 400 acres of land."
In 1743 this John Bobbitt has to be the son of William Bobbitt, the son of John Bobbitt of Chowan. This John Bobbitt has to be at least 16 or 17 years of age in order to be on the list of land for patents.
Montfort Ealbeck of Edgecombe County to John Corlew of North Carolina, 637 acres of land joining ..... JOHN BOBBITT, Turkey Creek, and Moses May. (Edgecombe County Records in Halifax County, recorded in Book 4, page 207.)
This "out of the family" deed proves that John Bobbitt received his land grant that was petitioned before the court in 1743. It is land in the same area that his father William Bobbitt lived, the same land area as John Bobbitt of Chowan lived, and John Massey lived. Note the name of Moses May who was one of the neighbors of the Massey family.
Lewis Bobbitt from Virginia did not receive his land grant until April of 1753. Lewis did not have his land surveyed until 1755 and that was about the time that Lewis and his family moved from Virginia to North Carolina.
John Bobbitt recorded in 1736, William Bobbitt recorded in 1744, and William Bobbitt Junior recorded in 1744, are now joined by John Bobbitt recorded in 1743. These were the first and only Bobbitt ancestors in North Carolina. They are the only names in the records before 1755 when they were joined by the family of Lewis Bobbitt from Virginia.
Granville County was formed from Edgecombe County in 1746. Edgecombe County was formed from Bertie County in 1741. Halifax County was formed from Edgecombe County in 1758. Bertie County was formed from Chowan in 1722. The history of the counties must be followed along with the history of the family. The land remained in the same location, but the counties they were recorded in were constantly changing.
