John Smart to Francis Capps for 80 acres of land on a branch at Bobbitts line, adjoining Richard Bennett, down Buffaloe Branch to a fork, part of 100 acres bought of William Bobbitt Senior in Halifax County 1744. (Bute County Records Book A.)
Here is another reference that William Bobbitt Senior who was recorded in a deed in 1744 along with Richard Bennett, is here recorded in Bute County in 1764.
At this point it is necessary to separate the families of our Lewis Bobbitt from the families of our William Bobbitt Senior. There are two deeds which do this for us.
Robert Moore to Miles Bobbitt ... for 10 pounds current money of Virginia, land in Granville County on the Great Fishing Creek, joining John Gunn, the Great Branch, and the said Creek. Witnesses: William Johnson, John McElvail. (Book F, page 517, Granville County records.)
This is Robert Moore selling or giving to his grand-son Miles Bobbitt, land in Granville County. Consider for a moment that Robert Moore and his wife Elizabeth, had a daughter, Elizabeth who married Lewis Bobbitt. Their grand-sons were Miles Bobbitt, Lewis Bobbitt Jr. and William Bobbitt. Their grand-daughters had married into the Williams, Person, Roberson, Powell, Duke families. Notice these names throughout the deeds and records of the Bobbitt family in North Carolina.
An Account of the sales and division of the estate of ROBERT MOORE, deceased. Persons making purchases at the sale were: Mrs. Moore, Nimrod Williams, Christopher Roberson, Lewis Bobbitt, Lewis Bobbitt Junior, Miles Bobbitt, William Bobbitt, William Powell, John Green, Peter Green, Thomas Stroud, and Joseph Duke. (Bute County records, Book 1, page 17.)
These sales were for the immediate family to purchase personal items that they wanted when a member of a family died without a will. It was also the only fair and legal way a court could divide the value of an estate equally among the heirs. Generally only relatives attended such sales and very close relatives were given courteous consideration for their choices in the auction of personal property.
We know that Amy Bobbitt, daughter of Lewis, married Nimrod Williams. I think it is significant that John Bobbitt did not attend this sale, or any of his sons, such as Drury and Stephen Bobbitt.
