The will of John Bobbitt is lengthy and complicated and is here shortened for the family history it contains. It was recorded in Will Book I, pages 252 and 309 in Sussex County Virginia. It was dated August 14, 1821.

My will and desire is that the whole of my estate may remain and be kept together under the management and directions of my executors, hereafter named, until my youngest son, Peter Threewitts Bobbitt, arrives of age, for the purpose of paying my just debts, the maintainence of my wife and children, and the education of my three sons, William, James and Peter.

All the profits of my estate over and above the supporting of my wife .... will be put to interest until my son Peter Threewits Bobbitt arrives at age twenty one years, and then that it will be equally divided between my six children: Florina Everitt Bobbitt, Lucy Jones Bobbitt, Frances Mitchell Bobbitt, William Golf Bobbitt, James Edward Bobbitt, and Peter Threewitts Bobbitt, to them and their heirs forever.

I bequeath to my son Green Branch Bobbitt part of the tract of land on which I now live on Cabbinslick Branch...also to my son Green Branch Bobbitt, two negroes ......

I bequeath to my son William Golf Bobbitt the remaining part of my land ... but should either of my said sons, died without lawful begotten heirs, then the land should be possessed by the survivor.

To my daughter, Lucy Jones Bobbitt, two negroes and one feather bed .....

To my son James Edward Bobbitt, half of my tract of land on the Nottoway River and two negroes and one feather bed. To my son Peter Threewits Bobbitt, the other half of my plantation on the Nottoway River and two negroes.

Should either of my sons, James or Peter, die without issue, then and in that case the land bequeathed to the one that my die, I give and bequeath to the survivor to them and their heirs forever....

All the remaining part of my estate of what kind so ever, I lend to my wife Frances during her natural life .... at her death my will is that the whole of my estate be sold and the money divided equally into five parts, and one part I give to the children of my daughter, Betsey Rainey, deceased.

I give to my grand-son, John Bobbitt Eckols, one part and the other part to my daughter Florina E. Robertson, and the other part to my daughter, Lucy Jones Bobbitt and the remaining part to my daughter Frances Mitchell Bobbitt .........
