until her death in 1864 at the age of 98. There is little doubt that Sarah had a great influence on the family. The fact that one of the sons was named James Burrows Bobbitt is an indication of this influence.

One of the most interesting records is from the 1850 census of Halifax County in which Sheerwood Bobbitt and his family were listed.

Family # 765, counted August 15, 1850.

Sheerwood Bobbitt           43 (1807) North Carolina

Ann Bobbitt                42 (1808) North Carolina

Angelica Bobbitt           18 (1832) North Carolina

Martha Bobbitt             17 (1833) North Carolina

James Bobbitt              16 (1834) North Carolina

Henry Bobbitt               9 (1841) North Carolina

Nancy Bobbitt               7 (1843) North Carolina

Margaret Bobbitt            4 (1846) North Carolina

Walter Bobbitt              2 (1848) North Carolina

Sarah (Burrows) Bobbitt     85 (1765) North Carolina

The Raleigh Christian Advocate carried obituaries of both Ann and Sheerwood Bobbitt in 1877. Ann Bobbitt died January 7, 1877 and Sheerwood Bobbitt died January 24, 1877.

Excerpts from the obituaries are interesting. The originals are owned by Mrs. Reuben H. Clark of Norlina, North Carolina.

"Died at Elkin, North Carolina, January 7th, 1877 Mrs. Ann Eliza Bobbitt, aged 70 years, 2 months, 17 days. She was attacked with Pneumonia, and after an illness of about ten days, died in great peace. Her maiden name was Pierce, a relative of Rev. Hilliard Judge and Rev. Jackson Judge. She was also a relative of Dr. Lovick Pierce of Georgia. She joined the Methodist Church in early life and lived a consistent member of the church for more than fifty years. She was happily married to Sheerwood Haywood Bobbitt.

"Sister Bobbitt was the mother of ten children. Three of these, after reaching the age of maturity, have died. The aged and afflicted husband and father and seven children are living. These are all members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Two of her sons are honored members of the North Carolina Conference, namely, Rev. William H. Bobbitt, and Rev. James B. Bobbitt, D.D."

It is not certain when the family moved to Elkin, North Carolina but it is likely they wanted to be near their daughter who lived there.
