Sep. 24, 1778 - John Bobbitt, producing a commission appointing him as Second Lieutenant in the Militia of this county, took the oath prescribed by law. (Pittsylvania County records, Book 4, page 156.)
Jun. 1, 1779 - Present at Montgomery County Virginia court. William Preston, James McGavock, Andrew Byrd, William Davies, and James Howell. On a complaint of John Dispain for sundry enormities by him done and committed the witness being examined and partly heard in his own defense, the court decided that he should be bound for twelve months and one day in confinement until he could find two good and sufficient securities ... Whereupon, William Bobbitt and John Clifton came into court and acknowledged themselves indebted to the Commonwealth in behalf of John Dispain. (Montomgery County, Virginia records.)
