Generation No. 2

2. LEONARD2 BROWN (WILLIAM1) was born 1740 in VA?, and died November 1833 in Sumner County, TN. He married SARAH KIMBROUGH Abt. 1762 in Orange County, VA, daughter of THOMAS KIMBROUGH and ELEANOR GRAVES. She was born Abt. 1740 in prob. Louisa Co, VA, and died Bef. 1802 in prob. Caswell County, NC.

Children of LEONARD BROWN and SARAH KIMBROUGH are:

i. BROWN3.

Notes for BROWN:

It is presumed that there was another daughter who married a Barker. Leonard

mentions in his will a granddaughter Polly Ausbrooks. Marriage records show

a marriage of Polly Barker to Sterling Ausbrooks in Sumner County, TN on

11-AUG-1804. Leonard Brown was a bondsman for this marriage. Her birth

order and birthdate are strictly speculative.

ii. ELEANOR BROWN, b. 1763, Orange County, NC; d. Sumner County, TN; m. January 15, 1785, Caswell County, NC.

iii. ELIZABETH BROWN, b. Abt. 1764, Orange County, VA or Orange Co, NC; d. Aft. 1833, IL?.

Notes for ELIZABETH BROWN:

(1762) Leonard & Sarah Kimbrough Brown's earliest records (deeds) appear in 1762 in Orange Co, Va.

(1764) Sarah Kimbrough Brown's parents sell land in Orange Co, Va in 1764 and buy land in Orange Co, NC the same year. The Browns presumably move to Orange Co, NC with, or soon after, the Kimbroughs (no Leonard Brown records found in VA after 1762;

first NC record found was dated 1773, but most Orange Co NC deed records were lost).

(1765?) Leonard's daughter Elizabeth "Betsy" Brown is born abt 1765, presumably in Orange Co, NC.

(1785-1789) Betsy Brown marries (?) Crickman 1785-1789, probably in Orange or Caswell Co, NC. (Caswell formed from Orange in 1777). No marriage record found, but Betsy Brown is named Elizabeth Crickman in her father's 1828 will. Only prospective

husband thus far advanced is Timothy Crickman who appears in 1790 Orange Co, NC census on p93, Chatham District. If

true, it implies Betsy and Timothy are living in Orange Co, NC in 1790 before moving up to Caswell Co sometime before 1800.

(1790-91) A son Thomas is born to Betsy Crickman, and a daughter Sarah is born abt 1791.

(1800) Betsy's husband dies by 1800, based on the 1800 Caswell Co, NC census for Betsy Crickman with no adult male: 10000-10010 (adjacent to her father, Leonard Brown).

(after 1800) Sometime after 1800 the Browns and Betsy Crickman's young fatherless family leave NC. Betsyıs next recorded location is Warren Co, Ky in 1810. Before 1810 her parents settle in Sumner Co, TN. (Prior to 1819 Warren Co extended to the

Ky/Tenn border above Sumner Co, TN). There is no record to show if Betsyıs family migrated with her parents to Sumner Co, before moving north to Ky. But that seems likely being a widowed mother at the time.

(ca 1808) Betsy's daughter Sarah Crickman marries (? Michael) Ausbrooks abt 1808, and a daughter Elizabeth is born abt 1809-1811. Thomas Ausbrooks, born 13 Apr 1813, is perhaps a second child. I understand no 1820 census for this family yet found, nor

any further record for son Thomas in Ky. Thomas Ausbrooks next appears in Fayette Co, IL in 1829 (see below).

(ca 1808-9) Betsy's son, Thomas Crickman, marries abt 1808-09, has a son William abt 1810 (no marriage record found).

(1810) The 1810 Warren Co, Ky census for Betsy (Brown) Crickman reads (10100-00010) interpreted as Betsy head of household (f 26-45) who should be abt 45, with Thomas (m 16-25) who would be abt 20, and Thomas' infant son William (m <10). As noted,

Warren Co, Ky is adjacent north of Sumner Co, TN in 1810, as the counties were then configured. The 1810 census suggests Thomas' wife died about 1810 before the census was taken, probably in childbirth with William. This would account not only for

the missing wife in the census, but also for the unusual gap in Thomas' children after William (see below).

(ca 1813) Sarah Ausbrooks' husband dies 1811-1813 in Ky. Assuming Thomas Ausbrooks is their son then the husband did not die before abt Jul 1812.

(13-Oct-1813) Newly widowed Sarah (Crickman) Ausbrooks marries Jacob Tinker in Warren Co, Ky.

(ca 1815) Thomas Crickman remarries to Elizabeth (?) abt 1815. Three children are born before 1820.

(1820) Betsy Crickman does not appear in any 1820 Ky census as head of household. However she does fit nicely in the household of Thomas ŒCreekmoreı in Logan Co, p44, as follows: m 26-45 (Thomas, 30), m 10-16 (William, 10), m <10 (possibly Clairborn,

infant, or non-surviving son), f 26-45 (Elizabeth, wife), 2f <10 (Malissa, 1 and Rebecca, 2-?), f >45 (Betsy, 55, mother).

Thomas Crickman has 4 more known children with Elizabeth in the 1820s including Gilbert born 25 Dec 1826. Gilbertıs birthplace is consistently given as Ky in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses. The 1850 census gives his birthplace as Tenn, but some

confusion is reasonable since he left his birthplace at age 2.

(1828) Thomas and family leave KY in 1828 and move to Hagerstown (near Vandalia), Otego Twp, Fayette Co, IL. One year later Jacob Tinker and Thomas Osbrookı also come to Otego Twp, Fayette Co. Thomas Ausbrooks was 16 in 1829. Jacob Tinker and wife

(Sarah Crickman Ausbrooks Tinker) are the stepfather and mother of Thomas Ausbrooks.

(1830) Elizabeth Brown Crickman is not listed in the 1830 census, but fits the age of the oldest female in the household of her grandson William Crickman in Fayette County, IL: Page 247:

Line 22: William Crickman, 10001-000100001 (ages m<5, m20-30, f15-20, f60-70). This is only speculated, however, we know she is alive at this time.

(after 1833) Elizabeth Brown Crickman died after her father's will was probated in 1833. She is likely buried in the same cemetery as her son, Thomas Crickman, perhaps on their farm. Her gravesite has not been located for certain.

iv. SUSANNA BROWN, b. Abt. 1766, Caswell County, NC; d. Aft. 1828; m. Abt. 1788, Caswell County, NC.

Notes for SUSANNA BROWN:

The only confirmed child is Mary "Polly" Melton. The rest are guesses based

on best available evidence.

v. WILLIAM BROWN, b. Abt. 1767; d. December 10, 1808, Sumner County, TN.

Notes for WILLIAM BROWN:

Very little is known about the life of William Brown. He and his family appear to have come to Sumner County, TN from North Carolina before December 1808. William's estate was probated between 1809 and 1811. Administrator's for the estate were Nancy

Brown and William Dorris, presumably her brother-in-law (William Dorris, Jr. m. Eleanor Brown). A record of the administration was submitted on 20-AUG-1811 (Estate #7, Sumner County Archives, Microfilm). On 22-JAN-1811 a deed transfer mentions "the

widow Nancy Brown and heirs to witt Mary Garrison, Azariah Brown, and Nancy Brown heirs of William Brown, Decd" to Edward Gwin. The transfer was for a tract of land on both sides of the Caney Fork of Drake's Creek of the Barren River, being 120

acres, adjacent Willie Cherry at a cost of $120.00. The deed was recorded during the March 1812 term of County Court in Deed Record 6, pp. 158-159 Mary "Polly" Brown married John Garrison in Sumner County, TN. She must have died before her

grandfather Leonard Brown in 1833, as John Garrison filed a claim to Leonard's estate as guardian of his four children: Mary, Hannah, Sally, and Brown Garrison (Estate #597, Sumner County Archives, Microfilm).

vi. THOMAS BROWN, b. Bet. 1769 - 1775, Caswell County, NC; d. August 01, 1855, Caswell County, NC; m. December 15, 1795, Orange County, NC.

Notes for THOMAS BROWN:

(1795) Thomas Brown married Salley Morris/Murray in Caswell County, NC on 15-Dec-1795. The bondsmen for their marriage were recorded/interpreted as William Davis and M. Hart. It is likely that Salley Morris was actually Sarah Murray, daughter of James

Murray and Susan Cantrell. Sarah fits the profile of the Murray daughter perfectly. Also, it is believed that William Davis (the bondsman) should be William Dorris, brother-in-law of Thomas Brown. (William Dorris married Thomas' eldest sister,

Eleanor Brown.)

3. vii. SOLOMAN BROWN, b. 1772, Caswell County, NC; d. May 01, 1849, Sumner County, TN.

viii. ROBERT BROWN, b. Abt. 1774, Orange County, NC; d. November 1849, Sumner County, TN; m. June 12, 1812, Sumner County, TN.

Notes for ROBERT BROWN:

He left a will dated 2 NOV 1849, proven Dec 1849, which named wife Susannah

and 10 children.

ix. SARAH BROWN, b. Abt. 1776, Caswell County, NC; d. Aft. 1841; m. October 26, 1799, Caswell County, NC.

x. JR. LEONARD BROWN, b. 1785, Caswell County, NC; d. September 28, 1851, Haynesville, Claiborne Parish, LA; m. 1803.

Notes for JR. LEONARD BROWN:

Notes from Dr. Margaret Green say that Leonard's birthdate was estimated from the 1850 Claiborne Parish, LA census, where he was 65 years old and living next door to his son, Nathaniel. Family tradition is that Leonard's son Nathan, in 1848-9, went to

Missouri to move Leonard to Louisiana. This was verified by court records showing the expense of the trip when Leonard's estate was settled about 1851-1852. Leonard had married again to a Mrs. Phoebe Brown (see the 1850 census) in Claiborne Parish.

They had a son named Daniel, who presumably did not live to maturity. One source claims that Leonard moved first from Caswell County, NC to Jackson County, TN. Information from Barbara Rimmer and Dr. Green says he was in KY in 1804 and Giles Co, TN

by 1820. It has been said that he served in the Blackhawk War, but Dr. Green was not able to verify this information. He was buried on the family plot on land now owned by Meadors, near Homer, Claiborne Parish, LA. There is one additional possible

son, Leonard D. Brown. He was found in the 1850 Cedar County, MO census, 17th district, p. 154, family #393.

Generation No. 3

3. SOLOMAN3 BROWN (LEONARD2, WILLIAM1) was born 1772 in Caswell County, NC, and died May 01, 1849 in Sumner County, TN. He married HANNAH CANTRELL April 02, 1791 in Orange County, NC, daughter of JACOB CANTRELL and MARY CANTRELL. She was born Bet. 1767 - 1771 in Orange County, NC, and died Bet. 1846 - 1849 in Sumner County, TN.

Notes for SOLOMAN BROWN:

Little is known about the line of Soloman Brown. According to a letter of

inquiry to the National Archives regarding the military records of William

Dorris, Jr., "In 1846, Soloman Brown, aged seventy-four years, brother of

soldier's wife, Eleanor, was living in Sumner County, TN, where he moved in

1817, with his wife, Hanah, aged about seventy-nine years, to whom he was married April 5, 1790." Soloman died in 1849 and his estate records list the following heirs: Jacob Brown, Levi Cantrell, Raleigh Law, Henderson Durham, Mary Durham, Allen H.

Coats, Elizabeth Coats, Sanford Cantrell, James Jones, Sarah Jones, Jemima Jones, and Elmarine Bruce. It appears that most of these individuals were grandchildren, not children. Based on the surnames mentioned above and early Sumner County marriage

records, it is speculated that Soloman's children included Jacob, Jane, Hannah, and Jemima. There were probably other children, including Sarah. Although Sarah was not mentioned in the estate records/lawsuit, it appears by the fact that she lived

immediately next to the other children of Soloman, that she too was a daughter. The following list of descendents is speculative and based on best available evidence at this time. A marriage record was located in Orange County, NC for Soloman Brown

and Hannah Cantol. The date was 2-APR-1791, which is slightly different from the date found in the William Dorris, Jr. military record.

Children of SOLOMAN BROWN and HANNAH CANTRELL are:

i. JANE4 BROWN, b. Caswell County, NC; m. January 23, 1818, Sumner County, TN; m. May 26, 1843, Sumner County, TN.

Notes for JANE BROWN:

The children listed may or may not be Jane's children. She married William

and lived with him about two years, when he left her and supposedly moved to

New Orleans. She filed for and was granted feme sole, but was not at

liberty to remarry without a divorce. She had one child then (ca 1822), no

name mentioned. The three Jones children are mentioned in the probate

records of Soloman Brown. Did William return? Did they have more children?

Are they her grandchildren by the one child? The dates don't support this.

ii. HANNAH BROWN, b. Caswell County, NC; m. May 13, 1820, Sumner County, TN; m. February 27, 1830, Sumner County, TN or Allen Co., KY.

4. iii. JACOB BROWN, b. Abt. 1791, NC; d. Bef. July 01, 1864, Todd County, KY.

iv. SARAH BROWN, b. 1794, Caswell County, NC; d. 1859, Sumner County, TN; m. March 16, 1816, Caswell County, NC.

v. JEMIMA BROWN, b. Abt. 1811, Caswell County, NC; m. December 09, 1826, Sumner County, TN; m. December 29, 1846, Sumner County, TN.

Notes for JEMIMA BROWN:

Jemima's age is confusing. The 1850 census says she was 36 making her

born ca 1814. The 1880 census says she is 69 making her born ca 1811. I am

inclined to believe she was born closer to 1811 as it appears she was married

first to Reuben Bruce in 1826. Jemima apparently died before the 1900 census.
