BENNET SUN Obituary:
Mr. and Mrs W.F. Deats Answer the Last Call
Pioneers of this Community- Death Claims Them Almost Simultaneously
Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Deats, pioneer residents of this community and early settlers of this immediate territory, passed away at thier home, Tuesday morning, November 27th. Mr. Deats Succumbing to a stroke of paralysis, which held him bedfast for the past two months and resulted in his death, and Mrs. Deats to an aggravated attack of Brights disease of long standing.
Together in life, togeather in death. What were words can potray the beauty of it? Hand and hand they suffered the hardships of early pioneer life; hand in hand they struggled upward and forward; hand in hand they shared life's joys and sorrows; and hand in hand they answered the call of the Master when their work was done. Mr. Deats Succumbing just three hours and eighteen minutes before his lifemate.
Mr. deats was born in the state of Kentucky and moved to Iowa when a mere child. Being ambitious in habits and a lover of adventure, he set out for the west when but a comparative young man, making the trip on horseback. He traversed this community when it was not much more than an unbroken prairie, at that time our present village was not yet located and the only connection with the outside world was a stage line which ran a few miles distant form our present site with a ppost office located near where U.S. Ellithorpe now lives known to the settlers as Sod City but Officially known as Rebekah. After Adventuring for some time he returned to Iowa where he was united in marriage to his boyhood sweetheart and together they came to Nebraska to make their future home, imbued with the spirit of the early pioneers. They settled at Cortland, where they lived for seventeen years. They were highly respected there and had much to do with the progress of that community. From Cortland they moved to a farm near Bennet where they resided for twelve years, then moved to Bennet where they made their home until the time of their respective deaths. Mr. Deats was a man of great strength, both mentally and physically, and he gave freely of both for the benefit of mankind. Honest and upright in all walks of life, and a true citizen, his guiding hand will be greatly missed by all with whom he came in contact.
Mrs Deats was born in Iowa and resided there until she moved with her husbsnd to Nebraska. At the age of seven years her Mother died, leaving her alone in the world as her father was away to war. This however, did not daunt her courage but instead seemed to bring forth the more noble qualities of childhood. She made her home with various relatives until his return two years later, then returned to his side. Life's early sorrows were as stepping stones toward a greater life and she was blossomed into beauyiful womanhood untarnished by early carefree frivolities. As a life partner she was ideal, and she bore the hardships of life with serene capability and fortitude. Gentle in disposition, thoughtful in all her actions, she made a host of friends wherever she went.
William Franklin Deats was born June 13th, 1851 at Sheperdville, Bullitt County, Kentucky and died at Bennet, Nebraska, November 27th, 1923,aged 72 years, 5 months, and 14 days.
Mary Tressa May was born March 13th, 1854 at Attica, Iowa, and died at Bennet, Nebraska, november27th,1923, aged 69years,8 months, and 14 days On September 9th, 1875 these two were united in Marriage at Lovilia, Iowa. To this union were born six children. Fannie May , age one month and Benjamin Franklin, aged four years prceded them in death. the four children living are: Ira D., Estella D., Oliver K., and Mary D.
In 1884 they moved to Cortland, Nebraska, where they resided until 1901, moving then to a farm near Bennet. In 1913 they retired to Bennet where they lived until their death.
Both were active in church work, being members of the Church of Christ for many years.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church on November 30th, at 2:00pm Rev. Aylsworth, Ex-chanceller College and old friend of the deceased officiating, assisted by Rev. F. H. Kennedy. The gathering which filled the church twice to overflowing, and had many beautiful floral offerings speaking of the love and esteem in which they were held far better than can be written.
They were laid to rest side by side in the Bennet Cemetery.
